Resumo: In the present study, 13 adult capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) were slaughtered at the Slaughterhouse of the Pro-fauna laboratory municipal district of Iguape (SP) and at the Campus of the Federal University of Viçosa - UFV (MG), with the objective of characterizing histologically the piloric area of the stomach and verifying the presence of endocrine cells. This area is lined by mocous membrane covered by prismatic simple mucous secretor epithelium, with gastric multicellular glands, constituted by numerous mucous cells and few oxintic and main cells; the muscularis mucosae presents two orientations of smooth muscle, inner circular and outer longitudinal. Bteween the two muscle layers, a well-developed mioenteric plexus is observed Argyrophillic cells were observed in this area of the stomach, being classified as "open" type and "closed" type.
