Resumo: | Olfactometry is becoming a tool for evaluation of air quality in areas exposed to unpleasant odour that emanates from industries, sewage treatment plants, solid waste landfills and animal waste handling, among others. The scientific basis of this method as well as its potential use are discussed here. Analyses of samples of either gas emission or the air are carried out by a jury of people selected and trained to make such evaluations, so that the critical points of a region and nuisance levels may be identified. Evaluations are made by determining the odorant intensity and/or the dilution factor of the odorous threshold (K50) by comparing them with standard chemical compounds (1-butanol or pyridine) and with an olfactometer, respectively. This paper shows the results of studies on odour emissions from pig waste. |

This paper shows the results of studies on odour emissions from pig waste.A olfatometria vem se tornando uma ferramenta de avaliação de qualidade do ar para regiões sob a influência de emissões de maus odores provenientes de indústrias, estações de tratamento de efluentes líquidos, aterros sanitários, manejo dos dejetos de animais, entre outros. Neste trabalho são discutidas as bases científicas deste método e suas potencialidades de aplicações. As análises das amostras de emissões gasosas ou do ar são realizadas através de um júri de pessoas selecionadas e treinadas para as avaliações, podendo ser identificados os pontos críticos de uma região e os níveis de incômodos. As avaliações são realizadas pela determinação da intensidade odorante e/ou o fator de diluição do limite de percepção olfativo (K50), respectivamente em comparação com soluções de referências (1-butanol ou piridina) e com um olfatômetro.
