Resumo: The knowledge of biometric relations of teleost species is useful for studies of piscivory. The aim of the present study is to survery the coastal teleost species of Rio de Janeiro State and to study the biometric relations between body weight and length and between otolith  size and body length. Eight collecting trips were made during 1998, between 21° 35’S and 22 °00’S. Fishing was performed by bottom trawls parallel to the coast- line from 0.5 to 2 nautical miles from the coast.  Sixty species of neritic teleosts, belonging to 29 families were recorded. Biometric relations were analyzed for 29 species using the exponential equation (Y = a. X6). In  general, neritic teleosts do not have commercial  value, but they are important food resources to the small cetacean species that inhabit the north of Rio de Janeiro State.

O objetivo desse estudo foi identificar as espécies de teleósteos que ocorrem na costa norte do estado do rio de Janeiro e analisar as relações entre peso e comprimento do corpo e entre os comprimentos do otólito e do corpo. Foram realizadas oito coletas descontinuas durante o ano de 1998, entre 21° 35’S e 22 °’S. Durante as coletas com rede de arrasto de fundo, o barco se deslocou paralelamente à linha da costa entre 0,5  a 2 milhas náuticas de distancia. Foram registradas 60 espécies de teleósteos  neríticos, distribuídas em 29 famílias. Relações biométricas foram analisadas para 29 espécies utilizadas – se a equação  exponencial ( Y = a . X6 ).  A maioria dos teleósteos neríticos capturados não possui importância comercial, mas constitui importante recurso alimentar para espécies de pequenos cetáceos que habitam a região.
