Resumo: | The aim purpose of this article is to review literature data concerning animal play behavior. Thus, some difficulties concerning the precise definition and theories of play (energetic cost, training of attack and defense behavioral patterns, acquisition of physical and social skills, etc) were analysed. The effects of social deprivation, sexual differences and manipulation of motor activity level by drugs as well as sensory cues used by animals during play encounters were also studied. It was concluded that play is a very complex activity which is not critical for the normal development of many species - play behavior may well be a facilitative developmental determinant. On the other hand, play behavior appears to be a right motivational system and is, in part, modulated by social and physical environment stimuli. |
