Resumo: The role of non-verbal communication on human speech seems to have been more understated than suspected. The new technologies of brain imaging and the findings of evolutionary psychology and child development stress the value of manual gestures, mainly the pointing gesture, in the building of the complex social interactions and, perhaps, in the neural pathways that control the speech. Only a few articles have been published in this area, but the practical applications of this knowledge on the improvement of communicative ability of autistic children has been demonstrated. Therefore, further investigations are necessary for a better understanding of the value of pointing gestures in humans.

Therefore, further investigations are necessary for a better understanding of the value of pointing gestures in humans.O papel da comunicação não-verbal sobre a fala humana parece maior do que se suspeitava.
