Resumo: ABSTRACT In Brazil there are over 18.5 million hospitalizations every year. Inpatient care units lack management technology that is capable of providing both users and professionals with a better experience. The PRAXIS management system fulfills this demand. The software is registered under patent 14196-6. This article's objective is to describe the PRAXIS technology and its construction process and to analyze its results after one year of use in an inpatient care unit. Methodological research served as the basis for creation of the software, and quasi-experimental study realized for the intervention in an inpatient care unit. Results present the structure of the technology and the effects of its implementation. Some aspects that emerged were improvements in the unit's performance linked to participative planning, care processes management, human resources management, resource management, quality control, and use of the electronic panel. The nursing team and an external assessment committee positively evaluated the technology. Its consolidation requires a maturation process, because it is a valuable and innovative resource for the performance of inpatient care units.
