Tradition and interpretation: taxonomies of republicanism

The purpose of this article is to present some of the main models of historical interpretation of the republican tradition. Starting from a heuristic concept of tradition that seeks to understand how ideas are transmitted and modified from generation to generation, we focus our analysis on three distinct criteria mobilized to interpret republicanism: 1) the historical-genetic criterion, which deals mainly with the origins of the tradition and with the values resulting from this foundational character; 2) the national, which seeks to emphasize the dilemmas and different contexts of republicanism in each nation; 3) and the socio-conflictual, which focuses on the sociological dimension of the tradition, dividing republicanism into two main axes, the aristocratic and the democratic.
