Resumo: The article is a reflective exercise: it is a critical analysis seeking to understand the meanings that underpin, in our contemporary context, the becoming of scientific practices. In order to recognize and comprehend the meanings attributed to the value of science, the representations and public discourses of actors who play a prominent role in the scientific system in Brazil are analyzed, within the context of budget cuts in 2017. There is a tendency to present the value of science through vague and tautological arguments. The value is presented as self-evident, emphasizing primarily the contribution of science to social, economic, and political life. These results highlight the obstacles to public communication about the relevance of science, a key aspect in the public scenario of defending scientific action, its outputs, and institutions.

No intuito de reconhecer e compreender os significados atribuídos ao valor da ciência, analisam-se as representações e os discursos públicos de atores que ocupam um papel destacado no sistema da ciência no Brasil, no contexto de cortes orçamentários de 2017. Observa-se uma tendência em apresentar o valor da ciência por meio de argumentos vagos e tautológicos. O valor se coloca de forma autoevidente, enfatizando, fundamentalmente, a contribuição da ciência para a vida social, econômica e política.
