Raymundo Faoros’s reflexions on the Brazilian political transition of 1989-90

In his papers and interviews published in the press, Raymundo Faoro reflected intensely on the political transition process in Brazil. This text is based on his analyses of the way in which the political actions of predominant sectors were taken at the time of the first direct election for President of the Republic after the military dictatorship of 1964 -1985, as well as on his discussions about the main measures taken by Collor in his first year of government. His arguments were based on the fact that, in the beginning of the 90’s, there was a constitutional rupture in the country which discarded the possibility of strengthening the Rule of Law for which the Constitution of 1988 gave way despite many difficulties and troubles.
