Resumo: This article focuses on the definitions of legal excellence and social recruitment of the Lawfaculties of the Universidade de São Paulo and Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie. First, weassess notions of legal education put forward by each institution through their respective academicprograms, websites, and undergraduate dissertations of their students. The social properties andprofessional aspirations of law students were then analyzed by means of questionnaires. Finally, the study of the Curriculum Lattes of Law professors and the carrying out of some interviewsallowed us to examine their academic trajectory and their views of the legal education. Theanalysis of this academic universe points to the coexistence of both a “esprit de corps” unique ineach faculty and a unity of Law that situates those institutions within a same field. It is preciselysuch ambivalence that endows legal teaching with a cohesion that ensures not only its existenceas a field but also the competition between the two faculties in question.
