Resumo: There are a few recent studies in Brazil that have addressed the theme of membership from the internal point of view of party organizations. In  part of this literature, the main limits to the advancement of knowledge reside in the  difficulty of accessing the parties and, once this  barrier is overcome, in the quality of the internal records of the affiliates. In this article we explore the results of a telephone survey resulting from a convenience sample of members of five political parties in the city of Rio de Janeiro – DEM, PRTB, PV, PDT and PT –, seeking to analyze the profile of the members, the type of bond and the degree of party activism. As the main theoretical object, and in conjunction with one of the main debates in the field, aimed at determining the “engine of affiliation”, we will examine the weight of the variable’s ideology or career ambition in the process of joining and/or retaining the party.
