Henrietta Leavitt’s key role in the development of the period-luminosity relation in astronomy

Resumo: This argument draws from the pillars of Science Teaching, History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Science, as well as the gender issue in the scientific world, argued that a contextualized approach to the teaching of science through the discussion of a historical event in which a woman plays a central role can contribute to the engagement of women in specific fields. A stand-out example of that is that of Henrietta Leavitt (1868-1921), a computer at the Harvard College Observatory, who, in this capacity, formulated the Period-Luminosity Relation (PLR), a tool which would later be essential for the development of methods for estimating large distances in space. One of the people who continued to study the PLR was Harlow Shapley (1885-1972), whose research was much more frequently quoted by his peers than that of Leavitt’s. Considering the gender dynamics that marked Leavitt’s life, especially in the process of establishing the PLR, this study aims to clarify the role historically attributed to her in that specific research context through documentary investigation. The analysis of the social and gender relations therein is founded on Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory and Londa Schiebinger’s Feminist Epistemology. The results indicate that, in addition to his in-depth research, one of the reasons for Harlow Shapley’s prominence among astronomers of the time might have been his academic influence. The findings also reveal that the underrepresentation of Henrietta Leavitt’s role has been gradually decreasing over time, thanks to studies of the history in which she played a significant part.

Aquí se destaca Henrietta Leavitt (1868 – 1921), una computadora del Observatorio de Harvard, quien, en ese papel, llegó a la Relación Periodo-Luminosidad (RPL, en portugués). Esta herramienta sería más tarde fundamental para el desarrollo de métodos de estimación de grandes distancias en el espacio. Una de las personas que siguió estudiando esta relación fue Harlow Shapley (1885 – 1972), quien, por sus investigaciones, sus pares lo citaron mucho más que a Leavitt. Considerando las relaciones de género a lo largo de su vida, especialmente en lo que se refiere al establecimiento de la RPL, aquí pretendemos explicitar cómo aparece Leavitt durante la historia de la construcción de la RPL, a través de una investigación documental, con una base de análisis de las relaciones sociales y de género en la obra de Bruno Latour. La Teoría del Actor-Red y la Epistemología Feminista de Londa Schiebinger. Con estos se advierte que, además de profundizar en la investigación, posiblemente Harlow Shapley ganó más protagonismo entre los astrónomos de la época debido a su influencia académica. También se señaló que la omisión del papel de Henrietta Leavitt ha ido disminuyendo lentamente en la actualidad debido a los estudios de la historia en la que ella se insertó.Tendo como pilares o Ensino, a História, a Filosofia e a Sociologia das Ciências e a questão de gênero no mundo científico, defende-se que ensino contextualizado à discussão de um acontecimento histórico, no qual uma mulher teve papel central, pode auxiliar no engajamento de mulheres na área. Aqui destaca-se Henrietta Leavitt (1868-1921), uma calculadora do Observatório de Harvard, que nesta função chegou à formulação da Relação Período-Luminosidade (RPL), ferramenta que mais tarde seria essencial para o desenvolvimento de métodos de estimativa de grandes distâncias no espaço. Uma das pessoas que deu continuidade aos estudos sobre esta relação foi Harlow Shapley (1885- 1972), o qual, devido a suas pesquisas, foi muito mais citado pelos pares do que Leavitt. Considerando que existiram relações de gênero ao longo de sua vida e, principalmente, no que diz respeito ao estabelecimento da RPL, aqui se pretende explicitar como Henrietta Leavitt aparece ao longo da história da construção da RPL, através da pesquisa documental, tendo como base de análise das relações sociais a Teoria Ator-Rede de Bruno Latour e a Epistemologia feminista de Londa Schiebinger.
