Nature of Science as means of resistance against Anti-science movements: structural realism as a counterpoint to the epistemic relativism

Resumo: | This work addresses questions situated in the debate of the Nature of Science (NOS) on science teaching. We argue that the metascientific contents which shape the historical-philosophical approaches must be updated in order to face the political, social and educational challenges imposed by our times, namely the antiscience movements and exacerbated relativist speeches. We advocate for a critical discourse to naive positivist views of science, but that at the same time is capable of accounting for its epistemic virtues, configuring a resistance strategy against exaggerated forms of epistemic relativism. More specifically, we situate this debate within the issue of the scientific change, a topic of the philosophy of science that dialogues with the subjects considered relevant in the teaching of Nature of Science. We present the contributions of the structural realism for the construction of a moderate speech relative to the dilemma about the provisory and discontinuous aspect of science in one hand, and its possibility of progress and commitment with the truth and reality on the other hand. |

Defendemos que os conteúdos metacientíficos que dão forma às abordagens histórico-filosóficas no ensino precisam sofrer atualizações que façam frente aos desafios políticos, sociais e educacionais impostos pelos nossos tempos, nos quais movimentos anticientíficos e discursos exageradamente relativistas ganham força. Advogamos por discursos críticos às visões “positivistas ingênuas” sobre a ciência, mas que ao mesmo tempo seja capaz de dar conta de suas virtudes epistêmicas, configurando uma estratégia de resistência a formas exageradas de relativismo epistêmico. Mais especificamente, localizamos este debate dentro do problema da mudança científica, tópico da filosofia da ciência que dialoga com temas considerados relevantes no ensino da Natureza da Ciência.
