A study developed from the speech at the round table "Challenges of the profession: librarians and records managers", composed of two librarians and two records managers, held on March 16, 2018, component of the IX Encontro Acadêmico do GCI organized by the Departamento de Ciência da Informação from the Universidade Federal Fluminense, in the city of Niterói, state of Rio de Janeiro. It presents a reflection on the professional challenges that can be faced by records managers in the professional exercise, from the perspective of the lived experience, in two main fronts: the general challenges, understood as competences to be developed, being: leadership, people management, management of materials, innovation and interdisciplinarity, and specific challenges, dealing with political and bureaucratic issues specifically faced by records managers. Therefore, it aims to provide a reflection on the professional challenges, specifically faced by records managers, students of the course of Archival Science and professionals in the field. As a methodological procedure, a literature review is used to survey concepts and experience as an empirical field.
