This article results from the work of finishing the Bachelor's degree in Archivology, and aims to analyze the development of classification activities and archival description in the archives of the IFES - Federal Institutions of Higher Education of the Southern Region of Brazil. It seeks to identify and characterize the archival functions of classification and description, to identify the support instruments used in these archival functions and to verify which processes of ORI - Organization and representation of the Information are developed in these institutions. The approach is quantitative-qualitative, exploratory and case-study. Nine institutions participated in this study, which answered the questionnaire sent by e-mail, with questions related to ORI, specifically regarding the classification and archival description activities carried out. The results indicate that 88.89% of the IFES perform the archival classification activity, and 66.67% carry out the archival description activity, and use the tools to support them, provided by the National Archives. Although most are satisfied with the current ORI, all agree that these processes can still be improved to improve information retrieval.
