Devassas in devassa: a source for the reconstitution of the history of written culture in Colonial and Imperial Brazil

Resumo: The present study aims to address the multiplicity of research fields made possible by the documentary typology devassa from the analysis of the characteristics identified in the manuscripts that are part of the collection of the historical event entitled Conjuration Baiana, an important movement of revolutionary intent that took place in colonial Brazil in the 18th century which motivated vast documentary production currently held, mostly, by the Public Archive of the State of Bahia and by the Manuscripts Division of the National Library. Alluding to the need for a rigorous scientific systematization that takes care of the preparation of this type of material, at the level of paleographic and diplomatic editing, which values the scientific rigor that it demands, the aim is to draw the attention of researchers to the need for editions of historical sources are carried out in order to guarantee the reliability of the original sources, establishing a bridge between the physical and digital document.

Abordamos aspectos teóricos y metodológicos de análisis, descripción y clasificación de dicha tipología, a partir de algunos ejemplos de este tipo de documentación histórica, especialmente de las características identificadas en los manuscritos que componen el acervo del acontecimiento histórico denominado Conjura Bahiana, importante movimiento revolucionario ocurrido en la ciudad de Salvador a finales del siglo XVIII, que motivó una vasta producción documental actualmente conservada, en su mayoría, por el Archivo Público del Estado de Bahía y por la División de Manuscritos de la Biblioteca Nacional. Aludiendo a la necesidad de llevar a cabo una rigurosa sistematización científica que dé cuenta de la elaboración de este tipo de material, en términos de edición paleográfica y diplomática, que valore el rigor científico que exige, el propósito es llamar la atención de los investigadores sobre la necesidad de llevar a cabo ediciones de fuentes históricas que aseguren la fiabilidad de las fuentes originales, estableciendo un puente entre el documento físico y el digital(izado).O presente estudo tem por objetivo abordar as multiplicidades de campos de pesquisa possibilitados pela tipologia documental devassa, com enfoque nos estudos da história da cultura escrita, da linguística e da história. Abordamos aspectos teórico-metodológicos de análise, descrição e classificação da tipologia citada, tendo como base alguns exemplos desse tipo de documentação histórica, sobretudo as características identificadas nos manuscritos que compõem o acervo do evento histórico intitulado Conjuração Baiana, importante movimento de intento revolucionário ocorrido na cidade de Salvador no final do século XVIII, que motivou vasta produção documental custodiada atualmente, majoritariamente, pelo Arquivo Público do Estado da Bahia e pela Divisão de Manuscritos da Biblioteca Nacional.
