The Principle of Provenance consists in organizing the documents of a certain institution so that the original order is preserved. Through studies carried out in several countries, and the observation of the constant reference to the literature of the field, this paper intends to present a summary of what has been written on the position of authors who contextualize the Principle of Provenance discussing the procedures of its consolidation in the organization of archives over time. The intention is to provide information to implement new debate and reflection, and better understanding of the practices, theoretical studies on the subject and the means, of applying the Principle, that will contribute effectively to the fulfillment of the role of the archives in society: to keep the order of the documents of institutions or people to tell history and preserve memory in a way to show their true objective and the reason for them to have been created, resulting in the access to their information.
