Information mediation: an analysis of the required attitudinal skills of the information professional

Resumo: Analysis of required competences for the information professional as information mediator on the perspective of the knowledge appropriation. Therefore, we use concepts of information mediation, communication and competences. Concerning the mediation, the role and the importance of the information professional arises as a social actor related to the knowledge appropriation; we discuss aspects of competences, skills and required attitudes for information professional’s mediation development. From the communication point of view, we approach its imbrications into the human interaction process. For the applied research development, we employ the qualitative approach. The research was conducted in order to expand the debate on the education of information professionals that is anchored in the theoretical and methodological foundations of Information Science, which has as its object of study the information, this being understood as a phenomenon of activation knowledge through a social action mediation. For the main outcomes, our study pointed out some attitudinal competence categories – personal, relational, entrepreneurial and social – that are required into the process of information mediation. We highlight that the biggest challenge for the information professional as a mediator is the necessity to develop behavioral skills with other knowledge appropriation process actors.

Para tanto, conceitos de mediação da informação, comunicação e competências foram utilizados. No que concerne ao quesito mediação, emergem o papel e a importância do profissional de informação como ator social no processo de apropriação do conhecimento; aspectos sobre competência, habilidades e atitudes necessárias para o desenvolvimento da mediação por parte do profissional de informação são discutidos. Do ponto de vista do item comunicação, aborda-se seu imbricamento no processo de interação humana. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa aplicada, lançou-se mão da abordagem qualitativa. A pesquisa foi realizada na perspectiva de ampliar o debate sobre a formação do profissional da informação que se ancora nos fundamentos teórico metodológicos da Ciência da Informação (CI), que possui como objeto de estudo a informação, essa entendida como um fenômeno de ativação do conhecimento por meio de uma ação social de mediação. Como principais achados, o estudo apontou algumas categorias de competências atitudinais — pessoais, de relacionamento, empreendedoras e sociais — que precisam ser mobilizadas em um processo de mediação da informação.
