Variation in verb agreement with “a gente” in European Portuguese

Resumo: This paper aims to prove that the verbal agreement with the pronoun “a gente” (the people) constitutes variable phenomenon in European Portuguese. The corpora, stratified equitably in relation to social variables education, age and gender, comes from the “Reference Corpus of Contemporary Portuguese”. For analysis, we used the Theory of Linguistic Variation (LABOV 1972, 1994). The results indicate in the variable phenomenon the prevalence of use of the third person singular, conditioned by linguistic factors “explicitness of the subject” and “tense” and by social factors “education”, “age” and “gender”.

Las muestras, estratificadas de forma equitativa en relación a las variables sociales escolaridad, faja de edad y género, provienen del Corpus de Referencia del Portugués Contemporáneo. Para análisis, recorremos a la Teoría de la Variación Lingüística (LABOV, 1972, 1994). Los resultados demuestran, en el fenómeno variable, el predominio del uso de la tercera persona del singular condicionado por los factores lingüísticos explicitud del sujeto y tiempo y modo verbal y por los factores sociales escolaridad, faja de edad y género.Este trabalho tem como objetivo atestar que a concordância verbal com a forma pronominal a gente constitui fenômeno variável no português europeu. As amostras, estratificadas de forma equânime em relação às variáveis sociais escolaridade, faixa etária e gênero, provém do Corpus de Referência do Português Contemporâneo. Para a análise, recorremos à Teoria da Variação Linguística (LABOV, 1972, 1994).
