Language policies for the COVID-19 pandemic: a look at the contexts of Angola, Brazil, Mozambique and Timor-Leste

Resumo: | This text brings reflections on the official linguistic attitudes of the States of Angola, Brazil, Mozambique and Timor-Leste regarding the dissemination of health information related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is about perceiving how institutional linguistic policies convey information regarding the human language rights of multicultural and multilingual peoples who inhabit the analyzed territories. From the testimony of native teachers from each of the nations addressed, it is clear that the citizens' mother tongue is not always used in official communications, which, preferably, is spread in Portuguese. Bearing in mind what the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Universal Declaration of Language Rights advocate, it is possible to understand that not providing essential information for survival in a pandemic situation in the mother tongue of individuals is a way of harming the Declarations, denying the right to language and life. |

Se trata de percibir cómo las políticas lingüísticas institucionales transmiten información sobre los derechos lingüísticos humanos de los pueblos multiculturales y multilingües que habitan los territorios analizados. Del testimonio de profesores nativos de cada una de las naciones atendidas se desprende que no siempre se utiliza la lengua materna de los ciudadanos en las comunicaciones oficiales, que, preferentemente, circulan en portugués. Teniendo en cuenta lo que defienden la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos y la Declaración Universal de Derechos Lingüísticos, es posible entender que no brindar información esencial para la supervivencia en una situación de pandemia en la lengua materna de los individuos es una forma de lesionar las Declaraciones, negando el derecho al idioma y la vida.Este texto traz reflexões acerca das atitudes linguísticas oficiais dos Estados de Angola, Brasil, Moçambique e Timor-Leste frente à divulgação de informações sanitárias relativas à pandemia de COVID-19. Trata-se de perceber como as políticas linguísticas institucionais veiculam informações em respeito aos direitos linguísticos humanos dos povos multiculturais e multilinguísticos que habitam os territórios analisados. A partir do depoimento de professores nativos de cada uma das nações abordadas, percebe-se que nem sempre a língua materna dos cidadãos é utilizada nas comunicações oficiais, as quais, preferencialmente, circulam em português.
