Resumo: | The Calçadão de Bangu, opened in 1992, can be seen as the foundation of a new urban model for the Bangu neighborhood in Rio's West Zone. By creating an exclusive pedestrian path, Rio de Janeiro City Hall redesigned a street that was surrounded by commercial buildings, the train station and a fabric industry. After about thirty years, the Calçadão has undergone renovations, disputes and maintains its central character in the Bangu region, being taken over by street vendors, pedestrians, motorcycle taxis and shopkeepers from different sectors. I debate the calçadão model as a setting for conceptions of cities and ways of creating everyday life. This article concludes that the calçadão model aims to organize experiences in public space and delimit them within the executed urban plan, while the people living there recreate and invert the planning of cities by occupying, transiting and commercializing. |
