Politics as conflict: the notion of antagonism in Ernesto Laclau's theory

The paper aims to present the antagonism’s theoretical approaches in Laclau and Mouffe’s Discourse Theory. Knowing the authors build a large analytic and conceptual apparatus synthesized on the idea that conflict is inherent to politics, the paper aims to understand how the authors conceive the notion of antagonism and what is its theoretical relevance. To achieve this aim, a bibliographic analysis is adopted as methodology, specifically using the works Hegemony and Socialist Strategy: towards a radical democratic politics, New Reflections on the Revolution of our Time, On Populist Reason, The Rhetorical Foundations of Society and some commentators. The results show that antagonism shown by the relational character of the process of identification of discourse in the order of the social, and by the contingency and precariousness of hegemonic discourse.
