“The monster’s rage”: the political rhetoric of the Jornal do Brasil regarding demonstrations in times of return to democratic normalcy.

The purpose of this paper is to identify the various opinions published in the Jornal do Brasil concerning a demonstration that took place in Brasilia on November 27, 1986 against the Plano Cruzado II. Other than merely presenting the motives that led to the demonstration, our interest lies in pointing out the heterogeneous discourses and diverging positions of the newspaper editors regarding this incident. Because they bring out other topics which did not formally belong – at least ostensively – to the claim list of those demonstrating (such as the recession, the government’s economic policies, the IMF, advances and setbacks of the democracy those reports, necessarily lead, us to a broader debate on the political and economical circumstances of the time and analysis of the complex process that involves the scructuring of the newspieces.
