Resumo: This article examines the representations drawn from the State of Maranhão and the State of Brazil, two separate provinces of Portuguese America, based on documents written in and about Maranhão from the mid-seventeenth to the mid-eighteenth century. It discusses how these two provinces of Portuguese America were perceived, and how the analysis of these representations can help us reflect on the complexity of the formation of the Portuguese America.
