The reception of Balmes in 19th century Brazil: an analysis from the ultramontane press

Resumo: This article intends to analyze the appropriation of the work El Protestantismo comparado con el Catolicismo en sus Relaciones con la Civilizacion Europea, by the monarchist theologian Jaime Luciano Balmes Uría (1810-1848), by the main ultramontane brazilian newspaper of the second half of the nineteenth century: O Apóstolo, published in the province of Rio de Janeiro between 1866 and 1901 as one of the main spokespersons of ultramontane ideals and projects, in tune with some of the Holy See's directives for the Catholic world at the time, aiming to stop the advance of the supposed “errors of modernity”. Having as a fundamental problem the process of circulation of ideas and cultural appropriation, it aims to compare the appropriations by the newspaper of excerpts and ideas present in Balmes' work, written in the context of the legitimist reaction to the sociopolitical vicissitudes and theological debates that marked Spain in the 1840s, identifying its adaptations and resignifications in the light of the Brazilian reality of the time, concomitant to the dynamics of printed circulation in a transnational perspective
