From the hydroplane to the automobile: the modernity experience in Luís Correia (PI) in the 1930s

This work aimed to analyze how the experience of modernity, in the 1930s, caused transformations in the daily life of Luís Correia through the arrival of the hydroplane and the automobile in the small coastal city. The main sources analyzed were the Almanaques da Parnaiba, published during the 1930s, in the city of Parnaíba, neighboring Luís Correia. During the 1930s, the experience of modernity, as in previous decades, brought about changes in view of the existence of new modern machinery that is integrated into the daily lives of the subjects who lived in the locality, in this case the hydroplane and cars, both for economic and leisure purposes, considering the importance attributed to the dreamed port of Luís Correia by the elites of Parnaíba, as well as the need to use the beaches for sea bathing. In this way, modernity, which produces desires and wishes, fears and uncertainties, was responsible for transformations in the landscapes and in the daily lives of the people who lived on the coast of Piauí, a stage of modernization in the decade in question.
