Hypercorrection of final coda (r) on digital texts: a variable phenomenon

This article aims to analyze the hypercorrection of final coda (r) on verbs whose hypercorrected forms match the standard infinitive written forms i. “o mundo não gira, ele capotar”; ii. “a maldade está nos olhos de quem ver”; iii. “eu dormir muito ontem”). The research corpus is composed by data of texts posted on digital platforms, such as the social medias Twitter and Instagram, as well as the chat app WhatsApp. The main theories of this study are Theory of Variation and Linguistic Change (Weinreich, Labov; Herzog, 2006 [1968]) and Usage-based Models (Bybee, 2016 [2002]; Pierrehumbert, 2003, 2016; Cristófaro-Silva; Gomes, 2020). The fixed effects analyses indicate word dimension and preceding vowel as significant factors affecting hypercorrection. The random effects analyses point to a possible lexical conditioning of the phenomenon, thus suggesting impacts of wrod’s written representations on the speakers’ linguistic knowledge.
