From general dialectology to contactual dialectology

This article seeks to present the idea of ​​a General Dialectology and its ramifications, especially of Contactual Dialectology applied in Brazil. For the theoretical basis of the work, there are discussions by Preston (1989), Menendéz (1990), Chambers and Trudgill (1994), Fisiak (1995), Thun and Altenhofen (2016), Heeringa and Prokić (2018), etc. Through a bibliographic survey, it was found that traditional Dialectology 19th century acquired new models to investigate linguistic variation. Today it is possible to speak of a General Dialectology (DG) that encompasses several aspects, i.e., within the scope of the DG one can mention a Medieval/Philological Dialectology, Structural Dialectology, Generative Dialectology, Social Dialectology, Perceptual Dialectology, Contactual Dialectology and Computational Dialectology. In Brazil, based on the geolinguistic works developed in the last 20 years, Social Dialectology is the most applied; however, there is a gradual increase in research aimed at Contactual Dialectology, supported by the Multidimensional and Relational Dialectology model.
