Resumo: Objective: The abstract, which is a representation of the information registered in the text that originated it, is a valuable tool for content retrieval in the most diverse areas of knowledge.  Thus, understanding the informative role of these microtexts, it was proposed to analyze the guidelines established for the development of articles’ abstracts in scientific journals regarding the Information Science. Methods: The analysis of guidelines for the elaboration of articles’ abstracts was performed in 24 national publications in the Information Science field, based on qualitative exploratory research and theoretical contribution guided by bibliographical and documentary researches. Results: Though there are convergence points between the recommendations of the consulted journals, the introduction, which is the contextualization of the subject, is not yet a part of the editorial requirements. Conclusions: Through the performed analyzes, the need for efforts towards standardization was evident, for example, in the explicitation of the demand for structured abstracts with the goal of facilitating the process of searching, retrieving and using the information.
