Open Data Recovery In APIs: consuming aggregate data from IBGE

Objective: To describe the data collection process in the IBGE aggregated data Application Program Interface (API), which provides aggregated data from surveys and censuses carried out in Brazil. Method: This research is characterized as descriptive and exploratory, with a qualitative approach, and applied because it involves a practical problem, which is data retrieval in the IBGE aggregated data API. To this end, a documentary research was carried out to identify the available routes and the parameters existing in the API that allowed the implementation, in a visual way, of the resource's operating algorithm, which was used to guide the construction of the endpoints for collection. Results: The API has a main endpoint that must include locale, period, metadata and variable parameters in a unified way. Thus, to present the aggregated searches and their respective granularity, the documentation provided has, in addition to textual information, a functionality for constructing the endpoint. This functionality proved to be important for the “consumption” of the API, as it allowed users who do not have knowledge of the domain to select a search, its aggregated data, variables, periods, geographic level and location, through visual components, converting user needs to the API standard to perform collection in an automated way. Conclusion: The IBGE aggregated data API has documentation that allowed its “consumption” in an automated manner, an essential requirement to promote interoperability and the effective reuse of open government data. The service proved to be stable and the routes and parameters were in accordance with the records available
