Typical occurrences of photographs related to human rights violation of Latin American military dictatorships

Resumo: Objective: The research sought to identify the functions of photography in these periods, in Brazil, Chile and Argentina, in order to reinforce the need to understand the photographic document as a tool for justice and the development of collections organization instruments that guarantee the maintenance of the properties of this type of document.Methods: A survey of occurrences of terms related to photography was carried out in the reports produced by the project Brasil: Nunca Mais and by truth commissions of the countries studied and analyzed the transcripts of testimonies. In addition, other examples of the occurrence of photographs were inserted in the context analyzed to complement the list of functions, which was classified and presented as a non-exhaustive result of these occurrences.Results: The 26 functions identified demonstrate that photography was used as an administrative product, was a weapon of political and ideological opposition that reinforced the press's position, was a resource in the search and denunciation of organizations of relatives of victims, was used by militants to identify torturers and for the production of false documentation, has been and continues to be evidence presented in truth and trial commissions, recorded and records the work of human rights institutions and acts as a political and artistic tool.Conclusions: Photography is increasingly expected to be understood as an integral part of the collections that contribute to transitional justice processes.
