Resumo: The Ingleses free sedimentary aquifer system is located in the island of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, in the district of Ingleses. This system is a porous non confined aquifer without a waterproof layer. It is responsible for the drinking water supply of 130,000 inhabitants of the northern part of the island of Santa Catarina. This work aims at discussing the environmental risks and the social return of a golf course at local level. Several issues indicated that the enterprise would not be approved: the technical data with clear indications of risk of contamination, the scanty social return of the enterprise for the local community. However, the enterprise received the political support of the City Council of Florianópolis and of the Environment Department (FATMA) for its implantation, remaining the perseverance of popular movement, involved in the aquifer defense, as the only hope for process reversion. Este sistema é do tipo poroso, freático, não confinado e desprovido de uma camada impermeabilizante. Ele é responsável pelo abastecimento de água de 130.000 habitantes do norte da Ilha de Santa Catarina. O objetivo desse trabalho é discutir os riscos ambientais e o retorno social de um campo de golfe em âmbito local. Diversos motivos apontavam para o indeferimento do empreendimento, tais como os dados técnicos com indícios claros de risco de contaminação e o parco retorno social do empreendimento para a comunidade local. No entanto, o empreendimento recebeu o apoio político da Câmara de Vereadores de Florianópolis e da Fundação do Meio Ambiente (FATMA) para sua implantação, restando a perseverança do movimento popular, envolvido na defesa desse aqüífero, como única esperança para reversão do processo.
