The Giant of Horto: narratives about the construction of the Independência Stadium (1948-1950)

Resumo: This manuscript highlights the construction of Independência stadium, in Belo Horizonte, MG. In this sense, we analyses local newspapers that circulated in the city between the years of construction of this stadium (1948/1950). As key figures in this process, two characters are crucial: the president of the Sete de Setembro Football Club and the mayor of Belo Horizonte. We argue that both were essential characters for the achievement for the project as they played strategical political deal in different scenarios (CBD, FIFA, sports clubs and also with institutional political agents). Contrary to popular belief (and even in the academic field), this paper reveals that the Independência stadium was not originally designed for hosting the 1950 World Cup. It was rather an investment made by the Sete de Setembro Football Club, which aimed to have an imposing sports complex in the city, and so compete against its main opponents.

Destacamos dos personajes: el presidente del club Sete de Setembro y el alcalde de Belo Horizonte. Ambos se configuran como piezas cruciales para la consecución del proyecto, asumiendo el juego político en distintas instancias (CBD, FIFA, clubes deportivos y agentes políticos institucionales). Al contrario de lo que se ha consolidado en el discurso del imaginario social (e incluso en el ámbito académico), concluimos que el estadio Independência no fue diseñado originalmente para albergar partidos del Mundial de 1950, sino como una inversión del club Sete de Setembro, que pretendía tener una imponente plaza deportiva en la ciudad, para disputar con sus principales rivales.Esta investigação tencionou prospectar o movimento de construção do estádio Independência, localizado em Belo Horizonte, MG. Neste sentido, investimos em uma análise de periódicos locais que circularam na cidade entre os anos de edificação deste espaço (1948/1950). Como destaque, dois personagens se sobressaem: o presidente do clube Sete de Setembro e o prefeito belorizontino. Ambos se configuram como peças determinantes para a consecução do projeto, assumindo o jogo político nas diversas instâncias (CBD, FIFA, clubes esportivos e agentes políticos institucionais).
