Resumo: The article presents a lesser-known translation of O Primo Basílio published in Italy in 1966, as part of a popular collection. The analysis of La cugina, besides offering one more contribution to the reconstruction of the critical fortune of Eça de Queirós, attempts to identify the mechanisms of literary manipulation that, in a translation, can move a literary work from the centre of canon to the paraliterary margins.
