Resumo: The aim of this article is to describe and analyze the representations and sociocultural characteristics of women who worked as nurses in homes, hospitals and nursing homes in thecity of Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As presented in announcements regarding the supply and demand of nursing services published, between 1880 and 1910, in the well-known Carioca daily Jornal do Commercio.
