Beyond the Quarto Distrito: the territoriality of the communist movement in Porto Alegre (1918-1930)

This article seeks to understand the spaces of organization and mobilization of communist militants in Porto Alegre between 1918 and 1930. The city of Porto Alegre was an important nucleus of the labor movement, where one of the first communist groups in Brazil was created, the União Maximalista, in 1918. The action of the militants created a territoriality in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, with an emphasis on the presence of the PCB in certain areas of the city, such as the Quarto Distrito, a region characterized by the presence of the factory proletariat. This situation changed from the end of the 1920s, with the creation of the Bloco Operário e Camponês, when the militant action spread to several regions of the city. This expansion of communist territoriality came to an abrupt end in the first months of 1930, when intense repression dismantled the movement.
