Resumo: | This study aims to reflect on the recurrence of the past in the TV show Arrow. The protagonist, who was presumed dead, is rescued on an island and starts working as a vigilante in his hometown. The aim is to understand the recurrence of flashbacks, referring to the time spent on the island, in dialog with the ongoing narrative. To this end, from a narratological perspective, we draw on the theoretical assumptions of Gennette (1989), regarding narrative discourse, with occasional references to Barthes (2011) and Metz (2014); and the considerations of Jost (2007), Mittell (2012) and García (2016), regarding contemporary TV series. It is identified in Arrow three meanings in terms of the recurrence to the past: the exclusive explanatory, which explains an acquired skill; the explanatory by conjunction, which requires others flashbacks for understanding; and the counterpoint, which helps in the psychological construction of the protagonist. |
