Resumo: Technological innovations have been incorporated into the civil construction sector. An example is the BIM’s adoption, which has been growing as an alternative for optimizing the design and execution processes. We sought to investigate what contribution BIM process brings to the construction waste minimization in public buildings. For this purpose, the building of the Reference Center for Social Assistance (CRAS), in Biguaçu/SC was adopted to study, whose design process was performed through BIM modeling. Some criteria for construction waste minimization through BIM were analyzed: (1) conflict, interference and collision detection, (2) construction sequence and construction planning, (3) reducing rework, (4) synchronizing design and site layout, (5) detection of errors and omissions and (6) precise quantity take-off. It was developed a qualitative research, with photographic records and work diaries, and in a quantitative research, with measurements of the area of sealing masonry on site and on the BIM model. The results show it is necessary to improve the process of detecting interferences, errors and omissions in the project phase, as well the planning and execution of the construction site. A proposal was developed to improve the processes of this public institution to construction waste minimization using BIM.
