A pesquisa foi realizada com base em entrevistas feitas através de mensagens de voz no aplicativo de comunicação WhatsApp com 46 jovens, majoritariamente universitários ou recém-formados pertencentes a camadas médias urbanas. Ao responder à pergunta “você poderia me contar sobre as formas como você se vestiu e se veste, no passado e no presente?”, essas pessoas construíram narrativas sobre a vida (life stories) ao redor do tema das roupas, que evidenciam que as vidas são vividas, lembradas e narradas em meio a uma cultura, a partir da qual as experiências ganham significado. Assim, embora cada narrativa seja uma história particular, os entrevistados compartilham formas recorrentes de falar sobre a infância, a adolescência, a vida adulta; sobre o significado, o valor, a função e o poder das roupas e sua relação com a pessoa que as veste; sobre moda, conforto, estilo, pessoa e personalidade. Argumenta-se, por fim, que as pessoas se relacionam com suas roupas a partir de um engajamento corporal, emocional, sensorial, relacional e biográfico. Ao falarem sobre suas roupas, esses jovens estão falando também sobre suas relações com outras pessoas e sobre suas memórias sobre experiências, períodos, lugares, sentimentos e conflitos. O fato de que as roupas e as memórias sobre as roupas condensam em si uma série de relações faz com que falar sobre elas seja um caminho por meio do qual esses jovens podem interpretar retrospectivamente a sua própria vida e o seu lugar no mundo, costurando seu passado, seu presente e suas expectativas sobre o seu futuro.This research aims to understand the way people aged 20 to 29 interpret the transformations in the ways they dressed throughout their lives, in order to identify shared narratives about the relationships that people establish with their clothes. The research was based on interviews conducted through WhatsApp with 46 people, mostly college students and recently graduated young adults from urban middle-classes. In replying to the question “could you tell me about the ways you dress and dressed, in the past and in the present?”, they construct life story narratives around the theme of clothes, and these stories show that lives are lived, remembered, and told amid a culture, from which experiences take on meaning. Thus, although each narrative is a particular story, the interviewees share recurrent ways of talking about childhood, teenagehood, adult life; about the meaning, value, function and power of clothes and the relation between garments and the person that wears them; about fashion, comfort, style, personhood, and personality. It is argued that people develop a corporeal, emotional, sensorial, relational, and biographical engagement with their clothes. In speaking about their clothes, these people are talking about their relationships with other people and their memories about experiences, times, places, feelings, and conflicts.
