Medicina.Objectives The present study analyzed the mechanical and physical properties from three different acupuncture needle brands classified by acupuncturists as high (A), medium (B) and low (C) quality. Methods Initially an expert consensus, involving experienced acupuncturists, rated, in terms of needling quality, three acupuncture needle brands as high (A), medium (B) and low (C) quality. Next, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were taken for 3 needles from each brand. These images were analyzed regarding the tip and surface finish of the needles. An insertion test was carried out to evaluate the force required for insertion of the needles into a silicon plate. In addition, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and dispersive energy spectroscopy (DES) were conducted to analyze the needle material composition and the presence of oxidation. Results SEM images revealed that needles from brands (A) and (B) presented a sharper tip and a more regular surface finish in comparison to brand (C). In the insertion test, needles (A) and (B) had similar performance, with (A) requiring less force to penetrate the silicon plate when compared to (B), whilst needles C failed to penetrate the silicon plate and to complete the test. The XRF analysis didn’t show significant differences in the material compositions among the three brands. However, needles (C) depicted more particles embedded on the needles surface and DES confirmed the presence of oxidation. Conclusions This study demonstrates that needling quality perceived by acupuncturists could be correlated to mechanical-physical properties of the needles, especially those related to finishing quality of the tip and the surface of the needles.Objetivos Este estudo analisou propriedades mecânicas e físicas de 3 diferentes marcas de agulhas de acupuntura classificadas por acupunturistas como sendo de alta (A), média (B) e baixa (C) qualidade de agulhamento. Métodos Inicialmente, um consenso de especialistas em acupuntura, classificou em termos de qualidade de agulhamento três marcas de agulhas de acupuntura como alta (A), média (B) e baixa (C) qualidade. A seguir, imagens de 3 agulhas de cada marca foram captadas em um microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV). Essas imagens foram analisadas qualitativamente em relação aos acabamentos da ponta e da superfície das agulhas. Um teste de inserção em placa de silicone foi conduzido para avaliar a força requerida para inserção das agulhas. Além disso, os métodos de espectroscopia de fluorescência de raios-X (XRF) e espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (DES) foram realizados para verificação da composição dos materiais das agulhas e a presença de oxidação. Resultados As imagens do MEV revelaram que as agulhas das marcas (A) e (B) apresentam uma ponta mais aguda e um acabamento superficial mais regular em comparação com a marca (C). No teste de inserção as agulhas (A) e (B) apresentaram desempenho similar, com (A) necessitando de menos força para penetrar a placa de silicone quando comparada a (B), enquanto as agulhas (C) falharam em penetrar a placa de silicone e completar o teste. A análise do XRF não mostrou diferenças na composição de materiais entre as três marcas. Contudo, agulhas (C) mostraram mais partículas aderidas a superfície das agulhas e a presença de oxidação foi confirmada pelo DES.
