SUSTAINABILITY IN THE REUSE OF WOOD PALLET WASTE: CASE STUDY IN A GROUP OF SUPERMARKETS

Due to the great anthropic exploitation of natural resources, caused by the current mode of production, there has been an increased concern with sustainable issues. Among these concerns is the disposal of solid waste, generated in large quantities and often disposed of inappropriately. Observing this reality and considering the large use of pallets by companies due to its logistical efficiency, this work aims to understand how the final destination and / or reuse of pallets already discarded and unused in a company in the supermarket sector of Paraná is carried out and its relationship with sustainability. The operationalization took place, through a case study, in which a semi-structured interview was conducted with the manager responsible for the organization. As a result, it is observed that the disposal of pallets occursby burning, being admitted as a non-sustainable practice. There is an environmental gain regarding the non-disposal of waste in landfills or dumps, which can be challenged by the emission of air pollutants resulting from the burning of the material. Neither are the social and economic benefits identified from the disposal of pallets currently carried out, but alternatives are recognized that are capable of meeting the pillars of sustainability
