POTENTIALITY OF LIFE NARRATIVES IN RESEARCH WITH ELDERLY

Resumo: The narratives of elderly people through the approach of life stories are the central themeof this essay. The objective is to present the main characteristics and processes of this research strategyas part of the biographical methods, while discussing its advantages in producing knowledgeabout the aging process and its potential as a space for valuing experiences and reminiscences in oldage. Without intending to exhaust or carry out an in-depth analysis of the issues at hand, a theoreticalreflection and methodological description about this type of narrative is proposed within thescope of qualitative research, with special attention to their contributions when used with the elderlysegment of the population. In a complementary way, examples of studies in the area are presented.It is concluded that life history interviews can broaden the understanding of meanings and meaningsunderlying the aging process.

O objetivo é apresentar as características e processos principais desta estratégia de investigação como parte dos métodos biográficos, ao mesmo tempo em que são discutidas suas vantagens na produção de conhecimentos acerca do processo de envelhecimento e sua potencialidade como um espaço para valorização de experiências e reminiscências na velhice. Sem pretender esgotar ou realizar uma análise aprofundada das questões em pauta, são propostas uma descrição metodológica e uma reflexão teórica acerca desse tipo de narrativa no âmbito das pesquisas qualitativas, com atenção especial para suas contribuições quando utilizada com o segmento idoso da população. De modo complementar, exemplos de estudos na área são apresentados.
