PERCEPTIONS OF NURSING TEAM OF AN EMERGENCY UNIT ABOUT THE PERSON WITH MENTAL DISORDER

Resumo: Aim: to apprehend the perception of the nursing team of an emergency unit about the person with a mental disorder. Method: it is a descriptive, exploratory and a qualitative research developed in 2009 in the emergency unit of a university hospital in Curitiba-PR, Brazil. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews involving 27 nurses. We used Content Analysis to analyze the data. Results: the nursing team sees the patient with mental disorder as an aggressive and agitated, they demonstrate stereotypical vision about it; they refer questions about the nursing care of patients with mental disorders but they consider that patients with mental disorders require nursing care. Conclusion: the nursing team of the emergency unit has a vision distorted and stigmatized on the person with a mental disorder and should receive training in the care of these patients.

Metodología: estudio cualitativo, descriptivo y exploratorio realizado en 2009 en un servicio de urgencia de un hospital universitario en Curitiba-PR, Brasil. Los datos fueron recolectados a través de entrevistas semi-estructuradas que implican 27 profesionales de enfermería. Se utilizó el Análisis de Contenido para analizar los datos. Resultados: el equipo de enfermería considera que el paciente con trastorno mental es agresivo y agitado, demuestra visión estereotipada acerca de él; se refiere dudas sobre los cuidados de enfermería a pacientes con trastornos mentales, pero tenga en cuenta que los pacientes con trastornos mentales requieren de la atención de enfermería. Conclusión: el personal de enfermería del Servicio de Urgencias tiene una visión distorsionada y estigmatiza a la persona con un trastorno mental y deben recibir instrumentalización para el cuidado de estos pacientes.Objetivo: apreender a percepção da equipe de enfermagem de um pronto atendimento hospitalar sobre a pessoa com transtorno mental. Método: pesquisa qualitativa descritiva e exploratória realizada em 2009 no serviço de pronto atendimento de um hospital universitário de Curitiba-PR. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de entrevista semiestruturada com a participação de 27 profissionais de enfermagem. Utilizou-se a Análise de Conteúdo para analisar os dados. Resultados: a equipe de enfermagem concebe o paciente com transtorno mental como agressivo e agitado, demonstra visão estereotipada sobre ele, refere dúvidas sobre o cuidado de enfermagem ao paciente com transtorno mental, mas considera que ele necessita de cuidados de enfermagem.
