Resumo: This paper analyzes the literary representation related to the struggles against gender inequalities in the work The first wife: a tale of polygamy (2002), by the Mozambican writer Paulina Chiziane. In this novel, the author brings a discussion in which she problematizes male domination over female domination with regard to marriage in Mozambican society. In The first wife, Chiziane deconstructs what she calls urban polygamy, which is different from the traditional one in Mozambique, and literarily represents the moral, psychological, and physical violence perpetrated in the African country against the female gender. The study is based on the theoretical-critical contributions of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Laura Cavalcante Padilha, Joseph Ki-Zerbo, Badou Koffi Robert, Thaís Cristina Santos, and Thomas Bonnici, among others.
