Resumo: This research aims to make a comparative analysis of two female characters created by Brazilian writer Graciliano Ramos: Madalena (from his 1934 novel São Bernardo) and Mariana (from the 2012 posthumous compendium of unpublished works Garranchos). Firstly, this paper draws on Madalena’s initial refusal to behave as she was expected to by the society of her time. Her later compliance with subjection is also addressed. Then, a comparison is drawn between this character and fearless Mariana in order to emphasize their contrasting characteristics. Finally, aiming to provide a theoretical basis for the ideas presented in this research, a brief analysis of some theories of gender is made so as to explain social and power relations generally imposed by society.
