A melancholy look: the tale of Caio Fernando Abreu

Resumo: The concept of melancholy has already received many definitions over time and among the authors who have turned to the theme it is not always possible to point out a convergent point. In this study, we do not intend to present an exhaustive approach to ancient and modern conceptions of melancholy, nor to choose a single concept of melancholy, as we consider the reference to different theories about the phenomenon to be productive for understanding images and narrative forms in Caio Fernando Abreu's short story. With this, we intend to point out that the “adoption” of a univocal concept of melancholy does not account for the writer's literary creation. As well as the concept, his stories also suggest nuances and specific traits that point to a unique melancholic perspective.

Nesse estudo, não pretendemos apresentar uma abordagem exaustiva sobre as concepções antigas e modernas sobre a melancolia nem eleger um único conceito de melancolia por considerarmos produtiva a referência a teorias diversas sobre o fenômeno para compreensão de imagens e formas narrativas no conto de Caio Fernando Abreu. Com isso, pretendemos assinalar que a “adoção” de um conceito unívoco de melancolia não dá conta da criação literária do escritor.
