Resumo: The year of 2016 is an important date for Graciliano Ramos´s history -- the 80th anniversary of his arrest by the dictatorship of “Estado Novo”, and is also the 62nd anniversary of the publication of Memórias do Cárcere [Prison memoirs]. At a time when we are witnessing public manifestations of Brazilians demanding the return of the totalitarian regime, ignoring the horrors committed in situations of exception, which were characteristic of dictatorial governments, I chose to wander through this last memorialist work by Ramos, concentrating on the role played by female image in situations and places without freedom.
