Resumo: This text analyses two books that belong to the so called “new prison literature”, which came out during the first years of this decade. Taking as a guideline the books Diário de um detento, o livro, by Jocenir, and Memórias de um sobrevivente, by Luiz Alberto Mendes, it discusses how this literature is built over an ambivalence which is revealed, beyond the narrative itself, by means of an adherence to both the values of prison and the external world.
