Resumo: | The purpose of this article is to analyze the narratives on epidemics written by historians, chroniclers and novelists, trying to understand how they describe human behavior in these situations. Classic authors of historiography (Tucídides, Boccaccio, Delumeau, among others) and of world literature (Daniel Defoe, Albert Camus, José Saramago, etc.) emphasize a dichotomous ethical behavior, between good and evil. The hypothesis is that this emphasis on extreme behaviors is a rhetorical element, resulting from the wish that the epidemic narratives are ethically exemplary. This reinforces Hayden White's idea that the boundaries between history and literature are not insurmountable. |
