Resumo: This article aims to analyse three significant contexts of the novel Why the Child is Cooking in the Polenta, authored by the Romanian writer Aglaja Veteranyi and published posthumously in 2004. It is a novel, in which the purity of childhood is assaulted by experiences of violence and incomprehension. With this in mind, this discussion will be focused on three distinct and predominant social circles in Veteranyi's text: family, work and friendship. In each of these contexts, the infant universe of the narrator and main character is confronted with a cruel reality. It is a reality laden with violence, in which the narrative voice turns out to be unable to decode its implications, given its inability to grasp the dimension of all the meanings it is confronted with.
